THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Fifteenth Day of October
- At Avila in Spain, St. Teresa, Virgin, the mother and mentor of the Brothers and Sisters of the
Carmelite Order of Strict Observance.
- At Cracow in Poland, the birthday of St. Hedwig, widow, and Duchess of Poland, who
devoted herself to the service of the poor and was renowned for her miracles. Pope Clement
IV added her to the list of the saints. Her festival is observed on the following day.
- At Rome, on the Via Aurelia, St. Fortunatus, Martyr.
- In Prussia, St. Bruno, Bishop of the Ruthenians and Martyr. While preaching the Gospel in
that region he was arrested by wicked men and beheaded after his hands and feet had been
cut off.
- At Cologne, the birthday of 300 holy martyrs who fulfilled the course of their struggle in the
persecution of Maximian.
- At Carthage, St. Agileus, Martyr, on whose birthday St. Augustine preached to the people
about him.
- At Lyons in France, St. Antiochus, Bishop, who, after zealously administering the diocese
entrusted to him, obtained a heavenly kingdom.
- At Trier, St. Severus, Bishop and Confessor.
- At Strasbourg, St. Aurelia, Virgin.
- In Germany, St. Thecla, Abbess and Virgin; she ruled the convents of Kitzingen and
Ochsenfurt and departed to heaven rich in merit.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
