THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

The Twenty-Fourth Day of October

  1. The Feast of St. Raphael the Archangel, whose dignity and benefits to mankind are set forth in the sacred book of Tobias.
  2. In the monastery of Fontfroide, in the diocese of Carcassone in France, St. Antony Mary Claret, Archbishop of Cuba and Founder of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Celebrated by his zeal for souls and his gentleness, he was canonized by Pope Pius XII. His feast is cerebrated on the previous day.
  3. At Venosa in Apulia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Felix (an African Bishop), Audactus and Januarius (Priests), Fortunatus and Septimus (rectors), who in the time of Diocletian were by the pro-curator Magdellian put into irons and for a long time enfeebled in prison in Africa and Sicily. Since Felix would not, in accordance with the emperor's edict, deliver up the sacred books, they were at last slain with the sword.
  4. At Tongres in Belgium, St. Evergislus, Bishop of Cologne and Martyr. To fulfill his duties in the pastoral office he journeyed thither, and whilst on his way, at night, alone, to pray at the monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary, robbers struck him with an arrow and he died.
  5. Among the Homerites in the city of Nagran in Arabia, the passion of SS. Aretas and his 340 companions in the time of the Emperor Justin, under the Jewish tyrant Dunaan. After these, a Christian woman was delivered to the flames, and her son, five years old, in his lisping voice confessed Christ, and could not be silenced by promises or threats, but threw himself headlong into the fire where his mother was burning.
  6. At Constantinople, St. Proclus, Bishop.
  7. In the isle of Sark, St. Maglorius, Bishop; after he had laid down the episcopal office, which he had exercised for three years towards a few scattered Bretons in Brittany, he built a monastery on that island. There he spent the remainder of his life in holiness. His body was later translated to Paris.
  8. In the monastery of Durin in France, St. Martin, Abbot and Deacon; his body was translated thence to the monastery of Vertou.
  9. In Campania, St. Mark the Solitary, whose illustrious deeds Pope St. Gregory has recorded.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
