THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Ninth Day of September
- In the United States St. Peter Claver, whose birthday occurs on September 8.
- At Nicomedia, the passion of the holy martyrs Dorotheus and Gorgonius, who had obtained very great favours at the
hands of the Emperor Diocletian. On their denunciation of the persecution which he made against the Christians, they
were ordered first of all to be hung up in his presence and all their bodies lacerated, then the skin was flayed from their
entrails, vinegar and salt poured over them, and they were roasted on a gridiron, and last of all slain by hanging. After
some time had passed, the body of blessed Gorgonius was taken to Rome and buried on the Via Latina and from there
translated to the Basilica of St. Peter.
- In Sabino, thirty miles from the City, the holy martyrs Hyacinth, Alexander and Tiburtius.
- At Sebaste in Armenia, St. Severian, a soldier of the Emperor Licinius, who frequently visited the forty martyrs while
they were kept in prison. From there by order of the governor Lysias he was hung with a stone tied to his feet, scourged
and wounded with rods and gave up the ghost in his torments.
- On the same day, the passion of St. Strato, who for Christ's sake was tied to two trees and torn apart, and
consummated martyrdom.
- Likewise, the holy martyrs Rufinus and Rufinian, brothers.
- In the district of Thérouanne in France, St. Omer, Bishop.
- In the monastery of Clonmacnoise in Ireland, St. Kieran, Priest and Abbot.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
