The thrust of the course is better data understanding and better data utilization. The advanced visualization technologies of today often skate over the necessary geophysical and geological principles, and thus do an incomplete job of understanding the geology.

GEOPHYSICS, GEOLOGY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

Principles: wavelength, resolution, the two limits, wavelets, clipping, amplitude preservation, migration, regularity, footprint.

Display: color, double and single gradational schemes, scales, data phase, data polarity, natural pairing, phase circles.

Structural interpretation: time slices, visualization, coherence, autotracking, horizon attributes, structural detail.

Stratigraphic interpretation: amplitude, characteristic shapes, horizon slices, channels, bars & levees, windowed amplitude.

Reservoir identification: hydrocarbon phenomena, characteristics of reservoir reflections, reservoir limits, tuning phenomena.

Reservoir evaluation: interpretation regimes, attributes, frequency, composite amplitude, net pay, porosity, pore volume.
