Children of Russ and Marian:
- SUSAN HALL DYER - b June 19, 1939 - Living
EDWARD RUSSELL DYER,
(Known to most "Russ") born August 12, 1902 in Montreal, Quebec,
Canada. By some unknown route and reason route he (along with his family)
moved to Detroit, Michigan. Later, he attended Ferris State University
in Big Rapids, Michigan (NKA XX) where he graduated as a Pharmacist. Russ died June 19, 1981 after a three year illness
with alzetihmers and is buried in White Chapel Cemetery near Detroit, MI
in a family plot of sorts - Sister Dorothy and her husband Bruce Yates,
Marian and Russ in one area and brother Ernest (Ernie), his wife Mildred
Wickham and son John E in another area nearby.
Russ married
Marian Hall Henderson November 07, 1933 in Angola, Indiana. They
had one child, Susan
Hall Dyer. Sue was born June 19, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan.

Russ was the confident salesman with a great humor and integrity.
Later, had a job in New York as a VP of Sales and Marketing for XXX. He and his family lived in Scarsdale. Sue attended xxx Elementary School.
In about
1947 or 48 he moved from New York to Ann Arbor, Michigan and bought
a house on Packard Rd.
He was the
owner of "Russ Ryed Drug Co". The name was
formed from the reverse spelling of Dyer because he did not believe that
people would buy vitamins from a Dyer – sort of a play on words.
Russ very creative and invented a lot of new chemicals. He had bath oil before Avon or anyone else in the
market place. He called his product XXX and
packaged it in an hourglass shaped bottle which was sold through independent
drug stores. He also formulated BARZ,
a revolutionary deodorant with no odor. Problem
was that hospitals would not a deodorant with no smell since they were
used to having a “Lysol or Pinesol odor” so everyone would know things were
clean. Later he took on a line of vitamins. These were formulated to his specifications by a
big company
In about 1953 or so he relocated in Ann Arbor to a house on Stadium Blvd.
Later, Russ ran a chain of three large drug stores in Ann Arbor called Fletcher Mack while he continued to do the Russ Ryed chemical and Vitamin company part time. The biggest was at the intersection of East University and the “diagonal” on the U of M campus. The store got a lot of student traffic and he did a great job in building the store from near bankruptcy to a known name. The building space was later sold the Follets Book store for their expansion. He also ran the FM store at the intersection of Packard and University across the street from the Blue Front and Moe’s Sport Shop. Both were landmarks in Ann Arbor in the mid fifties.
Marian had decorated the house on Packard and also the one on Stadium Blvd with antique bottles from a Pharmacy. They were used for decorations as well as candy jars, etc.
There was a 17 pound cat named "misty" and a black cocker spaniel named "rip?".
After the
move from NY, Sue attended University High School.
Sue was a member of the first graduating class from AA High School.
A $7 million school that was listed in some book as one to the top 10
in the US. The school board and chamber of commerce had a field day with
that.
In 1959
or 1960 Russ took a job in Foley, Alabama with the "Foley Drug Co." who made
an old line of patent medicines. The deal did not work out too well
for Russ who then became the COO of a new nursing home in Foley. This
was also a new concept and so it was another new frontier for Russ. He
and Marian had a nice older home in Foley. It
was on XX street with a big lot with nice and lots of tall pine trees. They
were living there when Marian died in 1971. Foley is known for its access
to the white sand beaches of nearby Gulf Shores and the “shrimp fleet” that
operated from nearby docks and canneries - much like the scenes from the
Forest Gump move.

write-up is on the Henderson sheet - Marian Hall Henderson
