This line of Hall's originated in England.

Our first known is Robert Hall born 30-Nov-1842 in Somerset Shire, England and died 22-Sep-1887 in Blenheim, Ontario, Canada according to his headstone in Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim.

Investigations in England have uncovered an entry in the 4th Quarter 1842 birth records of Somerset which may in fact be this Robert Hall. We have ordered a certificate from the Family History Center in London and await the mail to validate this is the one we are looking to find. Further, we have reviewed the 1841 and 1851 census of Somerset Shire and have found an entry in each census that also maybe related. These entries are in the parish of Long Ashton which is in the Borough of Southwark and the parish of St. Saviour (why two parish is a good question) is an entry for "Robert Hall, tailor, age 45 and his wife Martha Hall". This would be the father and mother, if in fact there is any relation at all. The Enumerator's Schedule reads "County of Somerset and Hundreds of Hartcliffe and Bedminster Parish of Long Ashton (part of) Superintendent Registrar's District Bedminster Registrar's District Long Ashton - Enumeration District 1; Description of above district - "All that part of Long Ashton bounded on the East by the river Avon, West by Yaulery Lane, North by the Park Wall of St. John Smith barn, South by the Boundary lines of Bedminster and Duntley". Microfilm reference HO 107 / 944.

We have also learned that this part of Somerset, Long Ashton, etc. is now part of Avon County. It is located to the southwest of Bristol, Avon County, England and Long Ashton is visible on most maps showing an enlargement of the Bristol area. There is a special genealogy group in England that focuses on the part of Somerset Shire that is now a part of Avon. We are contacting them for assistance in learning more about the early history of this family.

When we visited the Evergreen Cemetery at Blenheim, Ontario, Canada in August 1995 we found a number of references to other family members on the headstone of Robert Hall. In addition we found a second headstone and other markers of closely related family on the adjacent plots. Further, we learned of the Johnson / Johnston line (name was spelled two ways on the stone) which was noted on the HALL headstone (although we are not sure of the way in which this name fits into the family line - also there were no dates associated with these names). At this time we are doing limited research on this name since it does not appear in our direct line.
