The Whetham Family

The ancestor of this family, Major Thomas Whetham who m. Mary Crossin, and had three children, William, Jane, and James, came with the Royal Artillery to Canada and served through the war of 1812-15. He was at the battle of Queenstown Heights, and Lundy's Lane (25-Jul-1814), was twice severely wounded, and had his horse shot from under him. After the close of the war, Major Whetham, for his services as a British soldier, received a grant of land in Nelson Township. [Halton County, Ontario], and also a yearly pension until his death. He d. in Nelson Township. His son James J. Whetham, was b. in England in 1809, and was three years of age when the family came to Canada. He was raised in Nelson Township., and in early manhood, set. in Chinguacousy [Township, Peel County]. Here he m. Fanny Nevills of Erin Township [Wellington County, Ont.], in 1831. He had seven children, Annie, Noah, Lyddia, Jacob, Thomas, Martha, and George. In 1873, he moved to Normanby, and three years later came to Minto, and lived with his son George W. Whetham, until his death in 1878, at the age of 69. His wife survived him until February 11, 1906, when she d. at the age of 94. Only three of the children reside in Wellington Co., George, and Martha (Mrs. J. Lyons), in Minto, and Jacob in Mount Forest.
George W. Whetham, was b. November 19, 1854, in Chinguacousy and settled in Minto Township in 1876. He Married Melissa Holliday, daughter of the late George Holliday, who was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1812, and came with his parents to Lanark Co., in 1821, settled in Normanby in 1862; celebrated his Diamond Jubilee and died in 1897. George W. Whetham, has the following issue:
Jacob, son of Jas. J. Whetham, was b. in Chinguacousy Township [Peel County], in 1838. In his early days he followed saw milling, and worked mostly in Halton Co. Later, he came to Mount Forest, and worked in a foundry for some years, since then, he has been night watchman in the furniture factory. He is a trustworthy man, a most respected citizen, and a staunch Conservative. In religion, he is a Methodist. In 1870, he m. Elizabeth Clarridge, who d. in 1888, age 44. Issue: Phoebe Jane, (Mrs. R. Morgan, M.P.G.), Winnipeg, and George W., at home. Later he m. Mrs. Ellen Campbell.

(sp. Whetham?) owing property at Lot 15, Concession 17; lot 13, Concession
16 and lot 23, Concession 16.

In the Christian Messenger Volume 5, page 23 for the week of 16 April
1868 is the following marriage entry:
HEMPHILL-NEVILLS: on 13th, by Rev. Dr. Davidson, at the bride's Home, George Henry Hemphill of Port Stanley to Miss Rachel Elizabeth norman, eldest daughter of Joseph B. Norman of Township. of Malahide, Elgin.
NOTE: (I could not understand why Nevills was listed for the marriage entry, unless Rachel's natural father was of that surname and her mother remarried)
