The earliest SCOTT we know about is Evert Scott born about 1771 in New York state and died in Halton County, Ontario, Canada at the age of 80 years 6 months and 13 days on June 9, 1851.  We learned from his application to purchase the land in Halton County that he moved to Niagara County, Ontario in about 1809 where he lived for 17 years before moving to what is now xxx, Ontario.  At his time we have not learned anything about his wife and we know of only one child from this marriage, although we expect there were more.

The 1861 personal census of Peel County, Chinguacousy Twp, Ontario indicates that Susannah SCOTT and Francis L. SCOTT lived in district 2 (page 27 lines 32 and 35).  Susannah is listed as age 57,  born c 1804, in the United States, of the Weslyan Methodist and a widow.  Francis L. SCOTT is listed to be age 17 (born c 1844).  At the time of the 1861 census they were living in a one and one half story farm farm house apparently near the town.  The farm was owned by John HARE (age 32), his wife Elizabeth (age 34).  Also living in the house is John's mother Margaret Hare (age 73), John's sister Susan M (age 25) and John's brother Isaac (age 27) along with the child of John and Elizabeth - Abigail (age 1).  In addition to the two non related Scott's there is also another non related child living in the house - Ransford Emurick (female age 12).

From the 1861 agricultural census we learned that the Hare farm was in Concession 2 lot 16 and consisted of 100 acres of which 70 acres were cultivated and 30 were still 'wild'.  They had 16 areas of fall wheat; 8 acres of spring wheat, 4 acres of barley, 6 acres of peas and 4 acres of oats.  In addition the farm also has 5 steers, 4 milking cows, 10 pigs, and 12 sheep.

Mary Jane SCOTT died as an infant and is buried at the Huttonville Cemetery
Francis Leonard SCOTT born June 1843. The place is still unknown, but it could be in Chinguacousy Township, Peel County, Ontario, Canada. This is the only SCOTT for which we have continuing data.  See write up below.
Nancy M. SCOTT died as an infant and is buried at the Huttonville Cemetery.
Aaron SCOTT died as young child - 8 years 6 month 26 days
Evert A. SCOTT died as young child - 3 years 17 days

Francis Leonard SCOTT was married to Lydia Bradford Whetham born 4-Dec-1840 in Palmerston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada and died 19-Jul-1925 in Palmerston . She was the daughter of James Joseph Whetham and Fanny Nevills.  Lydia was born and lived on the plot of land adjacent to the SCOTT original farm in Halton County.
The 1881 Census of Mount Forest, page 76 indicates that he: (1) was born locally (somewhere in Ontario), (2) Worked as a Finisher (wool or wood is not known), (3) age is listed as 38 so he was born about 1843, (4) is of the Ep. Meth religion and (5) is of American origin. Frequently the various denominations shared a single church which might account for the Esp. Meth designation. Further, and more importantly, the census also indicates that somewhere in Francis' past his family immigrated from USA to Canada. He, however, was not part of this migration because he was born in Ontario. Therefore, it is likely that his father was born in the USA and might have been a Loyalist, a Late Loyalist or just came this way because of any one of a million reasons including the cheep land available in Canada.

The last documented location of this family was in Sept. 1870 at number 8 Concession Road 5 NH, Chinguacousy Twp, Peel County, Ontario, Canada as indicated in the birth registration of Abraham Jr.  It is also likely that he moved to Mt. Forest, Wellington County about 1881.
The 1881 census also lists the wife - Lydia, age 37 - described as being of English origin (we know this to be correct) and three children . They are Fanny age 14, Martha age 12 and Annie age 1. Francis L. Scott died 12-Jul-1896 in Palmerston and is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.  Annie Malinda Scott's birth registration in 1879 indicates that he is a farmer living in Arthur Township near Mount Forest.

Francis and Lydia had at least four children - note the long gap between the Martha and Annie - this leads one to speculate that there were perhaps others that died in childbirth or at an early age. This information was gathered from the 1871 and 1881 Census of Ontario and reports only a snapshot.  It was indicated that Abraham died at 8 years old from Diphtheria and the local records indicate that a number of others died about the same time from the same disease.  So of course we wonder if there may have been other children who were born and died in-between these years.

    1. Fanny Scott born about 1867 in Mt. Forest area.
    2. Martha Scott born about 1868 in Mt. Forest area.
    3. Annie Malinda Scott born 15-Oct-1879 in Ft. Forest, Arthur Twp. Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. Her birth registration (Ontario #034246-79) reads Annie Malinda Scott born 15-October-1879 to Francis L. Scott, Farmer, and Lydia B. Whetham. Birth informant was Francis L. Scott of Arthur Twp near Mount Forest. Registered 19 Nov. 1879 (more than a one month delay).  The Accoucheur was Dr. Yeomans and the registrar was William Cushings.  The birth was registered in Wellington County, Ontario.

    4. Annie married John Matheson Wickham on 12-Sep-1900.  The marriage registration (Ontario #xx-xxxxx) reads "Annie Matilda Scott, age 21 daughter of F.L. Scott and Lydia B. Whetham, born in Palmerston, Methodist married 12 Sep 1900 to John Matheson Wickham, age 24, C. Painter, son of Thomas Wickham and Christina Matheson, born Palmerston, Christian Science. Witnesses: F. B. Morgan of Palmerston and Florence Wood of Toronto. Continued on the Wickham Genealogy page.
    5. Abraham Scott b 30  Sep 1870 in Chinguacousy Twp, Peel County.  Abraham died at age 8 in Mt. Forest, Ont. ( xxx-xxx-1878) from a diphtheria epidemic.  The death is recorded in  book xx page xx of Wellington Co. records.

Research Questions - To Do's

  1. Review of 1871 census of Ontario - specifically in Mt. Forest - for Francis L. Scott (age 27) to see if we can find a family of Scott's with him as a dependent. The look at the 1861 (age 17) data for same thing. Use of the index to the census will speed search.
  2. Establish the date and place of the marriage between Francis L Scott and Lydia Bradford Whetham. Likely it was in the Palmerston area -- Minto Township. Local newspaper, church register, not likely it was registered with government as there was no requirement to do so at that time.
  3. Get Lydia's name spelled correctly - has been reported as Lydia, Lydia, Lidia, Lillia.
  4. Get Annie Malinda's name spelled correctly - has been reported as Malinda, Matilda and a few others.
