The earliest SCOTT we know about is Evert Scott born about 1771 in New York state and died in Halton County, Ontario, Canada at the age of 80 years 6 months and 13 days on June 9, 1851. We learned from his application to purchase the land in Halton County that he moved to Niagara County, Ontario in about 1809 where he lived for 17 years before moving to what is now xxx, Ontario. At his time we have not learned anything about his wife and we know of only one child from this marriage, although we expect there were more.
- Abraham SCOTT
- Other sons ?
- Other daughters ?
Abraham moved to Chinguacousy Twp., Peel County near Huttonville (which is just on the western edge of Brampton, Ontario). We were able to get this information from the land and cemetery records at the Archives of Peel County, Ontario. We have a copy of the land patent (original land grant) from the 'Crown' to Abraham SCOTT for Lot 8 of concession 5W of Peel County. The document includes his signature along with the price paid (2 pounds, 2 shillings and 2 tuppence including the recording and survey fee). The index to the land records, beginning Sept. 20, 1826 and continuing to 1854 show a number of transactions between Abraham, his sons and a number of others. Some of the early ones were to pass some land to his sons and others to lease (indenture) the land to some. The transactions stop in 1856, two years after Abraham's death. We also visited the Huttonville Cemetery and located the headstones of several of the family members.
Children from the marriage of Abraham and Susannah were:

The 1861 personal census of Peel County, Chinguacousy Twp, Ontario indicates that Susannah SCOTT and Francis L. SCOTT lived in district 2 (page 27 lines 32 and 35). Susannah is listed as age 57, born c 1804, in the United States, of the Weslyan Methodist and a widow. Francis L. SCOTT is listed to be age 17 (born c 1844). At the time of the 1861 census they were living in a one and one half story farm farm house apparently near the town. The farm was owned by John HARE (age 32), his wife Elizabeth (age 34). Also living in the house is John's mother Margaret Hare (age 73), John's sister Susan M (age 25) and John's brother Isaac (age 27) along with the child of John and Elizabeth - Abigail (age 1). In addition to the two non related Scott's there is also another non related child living in the house - Ransford Emurick (female age 12).From the 1861 agricultural census we learned that the Hare farm was in Concession 2 lot 16 and consisted of 100 acres of which 70 acres were cultivated and 30 were still 'wild'. They had 16 areas of fall wheat; 8 acres of spring wheat, 4 acres of barley, 6 acres of peas and 4 acres of oats. In addition the farm also has 5 steers, 4 milking cows, 10 pigs, and 12 sheep.
Mary Jane SCOTT died as an infant and is buried at the Huttonville Cemetery
Francis Leonard SCOTT born June 1843. The place is still unknown, but it could be in Chinguacousy Township, Peel County, Ontario, Canada. This is the only SCOTT for which we have continuing data. See write up below.
Nancy M. SCOTT died as an infant and is buried at the Huttonville Cemetery.
Aaron SCOTT died as young child - 8 years 6 month 26 days
Evert A. SCOTT died as young child - 3 years 17 days
Francis Leonard SCOTT was married to Lydia Bradford Whetham born 4-Dec-1840 in Palmerston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada and died 19-Jul-1925 in Palmerston . She was the daughter of James Joseph Whetham and Fanny Nevills. Lydia was born and lived on the plot of land adjacent to the SCOTT original farm in Halton County.
The last documented location of this family was in Sept. 1870 at number
8 Concession Road 5 NH, Chinguacousy Twp, Peel County, Ontario, Canada
as indicated in the birth registration of Abraham Jr. It is also
likely that he moved to Mt. Forest, Wellington County about 1881.
The 1881 census also lists the wife - Lydia, age 37 - described as
being of English origin (we know this to be correct) and three children
. They are Fanny age 14, Martha age 12 and Annie age 1. Francis L. Scott
died 12-Jul-1896 in Palmerston and is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
Annie Malinda Scott's birth registration in 1879 indicates that he is a
farmer living in Arthur Township near Mount Forest.
Francis and Lydia had at least four children - note the long gap between
the Martha and Annie - this leads one to speculate that there were perhaps
others that died in childbirth or at an early age. This information was
gathered from the 1871 and 1881 Census of Ontario and reports only a snapshot.
It was indicated that Abraham died at 8 years old from Diphtheria and the
local records indicate that a number of others died about the same time
from the same disease. So of course we wonder if there may have been
other children who were born and died in-between these years.
