This line of Wiles originated in England who subsequently immigrated to Canada.

John Wiles is the earliest of this line we know about. He was born about 1820 in England and died 15 Mar-1873 in Vaughn Twp., York Co. Ontario.  He is buried in Glen Allen Union Cemetery, Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

John Wiles married Maria Sanderson on 10-Feb-1948. Maria was born in Sutton Parish, Yorkshire, England 22-Feb-1822. She died 27-Apr-1902 in Listowel, Perth Co., Ontario. She is also buried in the Glen Allen Union Cemetery, Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario.    Her father, John Sanderson, was born in England as was her mother Ann Binnington.  We have no details of the marriage of John Wiles and Maria Sanderson, but it most likely took place in York County, Ontario in about 1840.  John and Maria had 13 children we know about.  They are:

  1. Ann Wiles. Born March 22, 1841 in Vaughn, Ontario, Canada. Ann died July 25, 1916. She married Robert Hall.
  2. George Wiles. Born 16-Oct-1842, Glen Allan, Wellington Co., Ontario.  Died xx-xxx-xxxx in Manitoba, British Columbia, Canada.
  3. William Henry Wiles. Infant death. Born Waterloo County, 20-Aug-1844. Died 24-Sep-1844. We are currently researching where this child is buried.
  4. Elizabeth Wiles.  Infant death. Born in Ontario 9-Jul-1845. Died 15-Jul-1846.
  5. Elizabeth Ellen Wiles. Born 26-June-1847. Died 14-July-1926.  She is buried in the Mountview Cemetery, Cambridge (Galt) Section 3, Dumfries North Township, Waterloo Co., Ontario.

She married George Powley and they lived together on a farm in Powley’s Corners, Peel Twp., Wellington Co. His birth and death dates have not been established.  He is buried in the Mountview Cemetery, Cambridge (Galt) Section 3, Dumfries North Township, Waterloo Co., Ontario. We believe that some of the children, specifically, Edith, Eva and Robert lived with their mother, Elizabeth Wiles Powley, at 60 Cedar Street, Galt, Ontario, after they sold their farm at Powley's Corners.  (We would like to find out more about George as he may have had a brother South of Owen Sound, Ontario.).  George and Elizabeth had six children:

(1)   Charlie - Charlie Powley was born on the Powley farm at Powley's Corners in Peel Township, Wellington County, on November 2, 1870.  He had a hardware store on Jane Street, Toronto in the 1930's, (Powley's Hardware) and he died at the age of 64 on October 19, 1936.  He was pushing his car at Bloor & Parliament Streets, Toronto and slipped and fell under the car wheels.  Charlie was married to Hannabel “Belle” Peart.  They had one child Frederick Bertrand “Bert” Powley who married Gladys Matilda Dunsford. “Bert” died July 2, 1969 at the age of 62 in Toronto, Ontario.  Gladys died in August 1960 in Toronto.  They had four boys:

Additional WILES family members -

This data is from the "Family Outline Compiled by June L. Hettrick - 1972".  This information was “verified” by Dorothy [Henderson] Yates.  This served as both the initial starting point for many searches and a part of the inspiration to undertake the study of genealogy.   Additional information came from the FHC microfilm No. F5-106-4846.  We also used the OCFA (Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid) index to locate some individuals.   Specific information about the Powley families came in surprise e-mail on July 12, 2001 from David Powley of Pickering Canada.  He found the web site by using one of the search engines.  He supplied much of the information about the Powley families.

David suggests that it was May Wiles, rather then Eva Wiles who married Mr. David Moggridge as suggested by June’s notes.  We did make this correction based on his knowledge.
