THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Fifteenth Day of September
- The Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary.
- At Rome, on the Via Nomentana, the birthday of blessed Nicomedes, Priest and Martyr, who
on saying to them that sought to force him to sacrifice: "I offer no sacrifice but to Almighty God
who reigns in heaven," was for a long time beaten with leaden scourges, and under this
suffering passed to the Lord.
- At Cordova in Spain, the holy martyrs Emilas, Deacon, and Jeremy, who after long
enfeeblement in prison suffered martyrdom for Christ's sake in the Arab persecution.
- In the district of Châlons, St. Valerian, Martyr, whom the governor Priscus commanded to be
hung up and tortured by cruel laceration with hooks: finally as he seemed immovable in the
confession of Christ, and continued with joyful heart to praise him, it was ordered that he be
slain by the sword.
- At Adrianople in Thrace, the holy martyrs Maximus, Theodore and Asclepiodotus, who were
crowned under the Emperor Maximian.
- Likewise, St. Porphyrius, an actor, who received baptism for mockery in the presence of
Julian the Apostate; but by the power of God he was suddenly changed and confessed himself
a Christian. Thereupon, at the emperor's command, he was smitten with an axe and crowned
with martyrdom.
- On the same day, St. Nicetas the Goth, whom Athanaric the king commanded to be burnt
with fire for the Catholic faith.
- At Marcianopolis in Thrace, St. Melitina, Martyr; under Antoninus the emperor and Antiochus
the governor she was brought again and again to the temples of the heathen; but since on each
occasion the idols fell to the ground, she was hung up and tortured and at last beheaded.
- At Toul in France, St. Epvre, Bishop.
- Likewise, St. Lubin, Bishop of Chartres.
- At Lyons, St. Albinus, Bishop.
- On the same day, the death of St. Aichard, Abbot.
- In France, St. Eutropia, a widow.
- At Genoa, St. Catherine, a widow, famous for her contempt of the world and her love for
God.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
