THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Twenty-First Day of September
- In Ethiopia, the birthday of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, who suffered martyrdom while preaching in that
region. The Gospel written by this saint in the Hebrew tongue was found by his own revelation, together with the body
of blessed Barnabas the Apostle, in the time of the Emperor Zeno.
- In the land of Saar, St. Jonas, prophet, who is buried in Geth.
- In Ethiopia, St. Ipigenia, Virgin, who was baptized by blessed Matthew the Apostle and, consecrated to God, made a
holy end.
- At Rome, St. Pamphilus, Martyr.
- Likewise, on the Claudian Way, twenty miles from the City, the passion of St. Alexander, Bishop, who, under the
Emperor Antoninus, overcame for the faith of Christ fetters, rods, the rack, burning torches, tearing with hooks, beasts
and the flames of the furnace, and, finally being smitten with the sword, gained a glorious life. Blessed Pope Damasus
later translated his body into the City on November 26.
- In Cyprus, St. Isacius, Bishop and Martyr.
- In Phoenicia, St. Eusebius, Martyr, who went of his own accord to the prefect and denounced himself as a Christian.
He was by him afflicted with many torments and beheaded.
- In Cyprus, St. Meletius, Bishop and Confessor.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
