THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY


The Twenty-Eighth Day of September

  1. At Boleslav in Bohemia, St. Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia and Martyr, glorious for holiness and miracles, who was slain by the treachery of his brother and so achieved the palm of martyrdom.
  2. At Rome, St. Privatus, Martyr, who, being full of ulcers, was healed by blessed Pope Callistus, and afterwards, under the Emperor Alexander, was beaten to death by scourging for Christ's sake.
  3. In the same city, St. Stacteus, Martyr.
  4. In Africa, the holy martyrs Martial, Laurence and twenty others.
  5. At Antioch in Pisidia, the holy martyrs Mark, a shepherd, Alphius, Alexander and Zosimus, brothers, Nicon, Neon, Heliodorus and thirty soldiers, who because of the miracles of blessed Mark believed in Christ, and were crowned with martyrdom in various manners and places.
  6. On the same day, the passion of St. Maximus, under the Emperor Decius.
  7. At Toulouse, St. Exuperius, Bishop and Confessor. St. Jerome has in a memorable account told how this blessed man was as sparing for himself as he was generous to others.
  8. At Genoa, St. Solomon, Bishop and Confessor.
  9. At Brescia, St. Silvinus, Bishop.
  10. In Bethlehem of Juda, St. Eustochium, Virgin, who went from Rome with her mother, blessed Paula, to Palestine; and there, having been brought up with other holy virgins at the Lord's Crib, adorned with great merits departed to the Lord.
  11. At Schornsheim, near Mainz, St. Lioba, Virgin, renowned for her miracles.
