27 February 1999Gummy wormsMy back is hurting. I thought I would get a head start on the weekend's activities (our official weekend is Sunday/Monday) because Tom and I have planned way too many things to get done in two days. I've been out planting mums. Texas clay is the hardest thing in the world to dig in, I think. Anyway, Mom wanted her pots back so I've put eleven pots of mums in the ground today. I'm not completely sure that they are all living, as 3 or 4 of them don't have any green growth on them, but it is early in the year.My big plan for the weekend is to get the furniture out of the garage. I suppose I should balance my checkbook just to see if I can afford to rent a shampooer. My thought is that I should rent a carpet cleaner with a furniture attachment to clean the hall and living room carpet. Then, I want to do Tom's sofa and get my two sofas out of the garage and clean them before moving them into the house. That garage is really starting to get to me. Tom's big plan is to build a fence around the veggie garden so that I can plant something in it without the diggin' dog digging it up in ten minutes. I planted the pepper seeds in flats a few hours ago. The tomatoes aren't ready for the garden yet, although they are getting their second set of real leaves now. I've been hearing from Tom and various relatives that I was supposed to get the young plants and put them out there instead of starting everything from seed. Perhaps I'll feel REALLY accomplished if we get a good crop. This is the first time I've started the seed in flats. Of course, we'll be sowing the carrots and the peas and the potatoes directly into the garden and I hope to get the carrots and the peas done this weekend. I just really soaked the bed, so it should be quite ready tomorrow. I watered our three trees, our three crepe myrtles, our two hollys and the new clematis/mum bed, too. I even dragged the hose around the house and watered the flowerbeds, the climbing roses and the legustrums. I should be getting my two new rose bushes in from Jackson and Perkins in the next few days. We plan to put them on either corner of the patio out back; both are bush roses. I have some Baby's Breath seeds for one of them and some poppy seeds for the other. I'll pub the baby's breath with the red roses and the red poppies with the lighter roses. Should make for some interesting prettiness if they grow. The poppies that I have in the seed flats are just now getting their first set of real leaves. They are such tiny plants, I'm not a bit comfortable about thinning or transplanting them. From what I've read, they should reseed themselves from year to year quite readily. I will soak the morning glory seeds tonight. I plan to put mixed colors to grow on the mailbox and the bird feeder pole and the blue ones across the back fence. One thing about morning glories, they seem to grow well in terrible dirt and we have plenty of that. Tom invited me to Tia's for dinner tonight. I love the margaritas there and usually have two of them. Looking at the menu, he noticed that some of them had gummy worms in them. The waiter said they came with the (expensive) Top Shelf Margaritas, so I just -had- to have one to get the gummy worm. I love gummy worms . . . |
