Tom's mother

A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary.

Ahh, Mother's Day

My personal Mother's Day got off to an excellent start. There were no kids in the house so I slept late. I'll bet that is number one on lots of mother's lists.

The ringing of the phone in the office woke me up. Gaspar was on the phone. "Ola!" he said. "Happy Mother's Day", I said. He laughed. We chatted a bit, he wished me a happy day, told me he loved me and passed the phone to Teresa.

One by one, I talked with Teresa, Tony, Eric, Alex and Rodney. Each of them wished me a Happy Mother's Day. Each of them told me they loved me. I sure had a huge smile on my face during that conversation!

While I was in here chatting away, Tom was in the kitchen making breakfast. It was too late for breakfast in bed, so he served it up in the computer room on the good china and everything! Mmmmmm cholesterol, my very favorite thing! Bacon and eggs with hash browned potatoes. I could get used to this.

My mother died nearly eighteen years ago, just a few days before Daniel was born. It feels like she's only been gone a few weeks sometimes. I sort of miss her lectures and she always had some to go around.

But she had an amazing sense of humor, too, whenever she would let go with it. Sometimes, Teresa and I get hysterical over some little thing and our uncontrollable laughter nearly always reminds me of the times my mother and I shared a little hysteria.

Tom's sister, Nancy, hosted a Mother's Day get together for my mother-in-law (who tells me to call her Mary Lou, but I call her Mom behind her back.) She is a most amazing woman; like Teresa, she is on my most admired moms list.

Only four of her five kids were there; Ellen lives in Holland and wasn't able to make it. There was an aura of contentment surrounding the dinner table. The camaraderie between siblings and their spouses was quite warming and I tried to imagine what it must feel like for Mom and Pop to be surrounded with such love. Then it occurred to me that I already know how that feels. I also knew the loving pride they felt in their hearts.

She got some nice loot, too. Each gift was thoughtfully chosen and her delight was apparent. One of my personal favorites was a teapot. It was designed by some celebrity (I'm really bad about movie star's names) who was on Mission Impossible and it had a real whistle on the spout. Cool beans.

Home again . . tired . . just HAD to look at Tom's new photos. There, on my keyboard, was a card and a gift. Daniel gets such perfect cards. It was a picture of a kitten in a flowerpot and some sunflowers off to the side. Inside it said:

                              For your
                       Mother's Day Surprise,
                                I grew you a cat.

                                   Enjoy!

And I had a sack full of gummy worms, too.

Does it get better than this?
