The Dead Tree

The moon is big and low and golden round this evening. Maude (the boy cardinal) perched himself atop the neighbor's dead tree and sang his heart out for us. I don't know where the mockingbird was who usually sits up there. Maybe he found a girlfriend or something. Normally, in an evening, that tree is his territory and he doesn't allow anyone else near.

The people in the neighborhood tend to consider that tree one of our major eyesores. It didn't really survive last summer's drought. Most of the tree is dead, reaching bare branches up for the bird's easy perching. The surviving branch - the low one, just broke off, leaving a leafy ramp for the squirrel.

I was expecting to hear from Teresa first thing this morning, but didn't. After awhile, I went ahead and made breakfast; it was late enough that I called it brunch. Pancakes and bacon. It soothed the tummy grumblings. Jason especially, isn't one to do without his meals quietly.

She called somewhere around 5:30 or so and said they were at a Ford dealership in a nearby town and would be over in about an hour or so. They did eventually show up with a brand new Windstar (drool) and lots of food for the multitudes. Since it was raining, we didn't cook out on the grill, but panfriend burgers are fine with me!

Then, there was the poker game. I adore poker, although I'm not very good at it at all. We were playing penney, nickel, dime with a three raise limit so that I could conserve my money. *smile* Finally, I got dealt the hand I'd been waiting for . a straight, pretty as you please. Needless to say, I raised and raised -- one can do a lot of that playing seven card stud.

People eventually started folding. When the last card was dealt, only Gaspar remained. He called. With great relish I laid out my straight, one card and a time, grinning from ear to ear and then reached out with both arms to scoop in the pot. Gaspar stopped me and I swear, he actually said, "HE HE HE HE HE" in a high voice as he laid down his four of a kind hand. *sigh*

It wasn't so bad, I guess. When the game was over, I was only down 14 cents (darn it).

Tom said he would write my entry for me today, but he worked on this instead. I hope he writes my entry for me tomorrow or there might not be one. Tomorrow will be send-out-more-resume day and I'll need to come up with the June stuff for the journal.
