Hank made everyone some wild grape
jelly from his annual, July 4th, wild grape gathering expedition.
He said he picked fifty-five pounds of grapes.

Waving
It is so good to have a couple of days off. Just two weeks of training
and, already, I am braindead at the end of each day. All of the stuff
I'm learning is new to me; before, I just had a vague idea of how all
this stuff went together. Very little of it is going to apply to my
job, once I'm out of training, but it is interesting, nevertheless.
I just like knowing things.

All of these months, in my unemployedness, I've enjoyed walking Tom
out to his car each morning for our goodbye kisses and hugs, then
I stand at the sidewalk and wave to him when he goes around the
corner up the street.
It is so odd to me, being the one to get kissed and hugged and sent
on my way each morning. As I round the corner, I slow down and
wave back to Tom standing on the sidewalk.
This morning, when I got to kiss Tom off to work (his days off are
Sunday and Monday. Mine are Saturday and Sunday), he made a special
little stop at the corner to wave in my direction. I loved it.

I woke up this morning just a couple of minutes before my alarm
would have gone off. I forgot to take it off of alarm last night.
Remembering it was Saturday, I turned the alarm off and went back
to bed. I didn't get up until around 8:00AM! Ahhhh, Saturday.
It is most definitely still summer out there, but my biological
clock is kicking in and I feel like Autumn is just around the corner.
It won't be cool here until late October, but I'm looking forward to
60F or 65F mornings instead of these 80F plus mornings. I don't want
to be hot when I first get up.
I think I've learned a little bit about gardening from this first little
bit I've done here. One thing is that plants that are suited for full
sun, might not mean full sun in Texas. Most do best with a bit
of shade.
The marigolds, however, seem to really thrive in Texas full sun. I will
certainly make good use of them next year. I need a lot more planning
before I can establish real gardens and Tom isn't all that cooperative
in that area. Maybe if I ask him to just humor me.

The kids aren't here this weekend. I feel a little odd about that. I
miss them when they aren't here. On the other hand, it is sort of
nice to be able to ramble around the house all alone. I've always,
always loved quiet time, even if I spend it doing chores.

There's a mockingbird darting around in the back yard. He looks,
sometimes, like a miniature roadrunner. Other, scratchy voiced birds,
are hidden away in the trees, making their growling noises. Dragonflies
and bumble bees are zooming around and Cricket occasionally disturbs a
cicada or two so that they take flight from somewhere in the depths
of the lawn.
