Development of Software Requirements Specifications, Use Cases, Architectural Models and high-level design of an Internet based message routing system deliver proprietary messages via digital cellular technology to regional and national truck fleets. Developed and delivered training material for the Rational Unified Process, Unified Modeling Language and mentored team members in OO analysis and design techniques using Rose and other Rational tools. Mentored the Project Manager in the RUP. The target architecture was a three-tier Java application with an Oracle database and JSP front end.

4/2000 - 10/2000. Engagement Manager, CommonVision Inc.

CommonVision is a software consulting company specializing in the development of Internet and Intranet applications. As an Engagement Manager I was responsible for providing day-to-day technical management of a number of project teams engaged to develop applications for a major energy company in Dallas. Applications being developed include both eCommerce and custom solutions and are typically built in Java or Visual Basic using WebLogic or IIS on a Microsoft environment. In addition, I was the principal architect of Visionabling, a web development methodology based on the Unified Process, with extensions developed specifically for the creative process.

1/2000 - 3/2000. Director of Infrastructure Development, Blockbuster Inc.

As Director of Infrastructure Development I was responsible for a team of employees and consultants engaged in the establishment of a common architecture standard for the entire web based development activities at Blockbuster, including their eCommerce site, Blockbuster.com. The infrastructure included the standard component model architecture, web servers, application servers, database interfaces, languages and tools as well as custom interfaces to legacy applications.

In addition I was responsible for the establishment of a common computing environment that includes development systems, test and staging systems and secured production systems, plus the methodologies and procedures for the configuration management of production applications.

7/1998 - 10/1999. Technology Director, Rickett & Company Inc.

Rickett & Company was a small, start-up consulting company focusing on Software Process improvement. As Technology Director I had total responsibility for all client engagement, staff recruitment, technical oversight of projects, training curriculum development, methodology and tool selection and business unit P&L./p>

  • Developed 5-year business plan.
  • Expanded client base and increased staffing to match.
  • Developed Process Methodologies based on best practices.
  • Trained clients in requirements gathering, Use Cases and basic OO methodologies.

10/1996 - 5/1998 Object Space, Inc.

Director of Educational Services (8/1997 - 5/1998)

ObjectSpace was a company specializing in providing Object-Oriented consulting and training services to major national clients. As Director of Educational Services I was responsible for a business unit comprising a staff of 12 senior instructors each deliver over 300 classes annually in O-O Analysis and Design, Smalltalk, C++ and Java at various levels.

  • Annual revenues in excess of $6M from worldwide operations.
  • National Sales and Marketing teams.
  • Training centers in Dallas, Austin, Washington DC, Chicago and San Francisco.
  • Expanded curriculum to include Distributed Computing and Requirements Gathering.

In addition to managing the business unit, I also taught Project Management and delivered various short seminars in the adoption of Object Technology to Fortune 100 companies.

Project Manager (10/1996 - 8/1997)

Initially recruited to ObjectSpace as a Project Manager, specifically to manage their first large, fixed price outsource project. Responsible for $2.3M budget over 10 months.

  • Staff of 12 software engineers, QA engineers and technical writers.
  • C++/Visual Basic client (Win95) server (Unix) application. Oracle database.
  • Rapid iterative/incremental development process.
  • UML notation and Use Cases.
  • Project referenced in "Applying UML and Patterns" by Craig Larman.
  • Development process was determined by peer review to contain the deliverables and standards of SEI CMM level 3, although for budgetary reasons not assessed.

1/1995 - 6/1996. Construction Manager, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity

As Construction Manager I was responsible for the building of the Habitat for Humanity homes in Dallas County. A staff of four supervises the work of up to 40 volunteers per job site, typically on weekends, during the 12 weeks it takes to construct the 1,100 sq. ft homes.

  • Built 22 new houses in 18 months.
  • Reduced building costs by 15%.
  • Relocated offices and storage to 100,000 sq. ft warehouse.
  • Developed construction training program for new volunteers.

7/1972 - 12/1994 Texas Instruments

CIM Software Development Manager, WORKS Program (4/1993 - 12/1994)

As the development manager for the WORKS suite of applications I was heavily involved in the commercialization effort. In addition to managing the continued development I also interacted extensively with both current and potential customers throughout the US and Europe.

CIM Software Development Manager, MMST Program (8/1988 - 4/1993)

The Microelectronics Manufacturing Science & Technology (MMST) program was a concept proposed by Texas Instruments to DARPA for the development of fully automated dry processing of semiconductors. The project was funded by the Air Force.

As a member of the proposal team I developed the cost and schedule estimates for the manufacturing automation software. As Software Development Manager I lead a staff of 25 senior Object-Oriented software development engineers designing and developing the MMST manufacturing system.

  • Responsible for the cost estimate which included over 100 man years of software engineering and a total budget in excess of $15M.
  • Identified and hired a staff of 25 senior engineers.
  • Utilized analysis and design methodologies of Shlear/Mellor and Booch in large-scale developments.
  • First major distributed Smalltalk application.
  • Responsible for schedule and budget using DOD Cost and Schedule Criteria (C/SCSC).
  • Assessed at SEI level 2.

Supervisor, Electron Beam Lithography. (5/1976 - 8/1988)

Initially started in Bedford, England in 1970, this program was funded from the Semiconductor Research Laboratory in Dallas, TX.

  • Relocated UK staff and laboratory to Dallas and formed a new development organization in the TI Process Automation Center.
  • Completed system development and started small scale manufacture serving the TI wafer fabs.
  • Managed the rewrite of the control and patterning software in Pascal and C on a VAX 11/750.
  • Designed and built the Photomask Lithography center comprising four lithography systems, a dual VAX 11/750 with RJE link to corporate systems.
