Balloon and Air Pressure Flight Test (2-5)

This was a popular entry at our school's science fair!

Objectives:

Students conduct tests, record and graph the relationship between a balloon's flight and the pressure inside.

Materials:

Procedure:

Students blow into the balloon only once. Measure the distance it travels when released and write this down. Then the students blow into the balloon twice. Again, measure and record. Repeat the trial with three, four, five and six lungs of air. Chart the results and ask the students to describe patterns. The results will be sporadic but a correlation will clearly be there. The balloon had more force when it had more air inside. Repeat the experiment with a test for altitude instead of distance.

Close:

Relate the experience to feeling the wind outdoors. Wind happens because air pressure is constantly changing everywhere.
