Color and heat in the light

This works best in clear sunny weather above 75º F.

Objectives: Students describe which color or surfaces either reflect or absorb heat. Students use senses and observation to draw conclusions.

Materials:

Procedure.

Students glue black paper on one piece of cardboard and white paper on the other. In the morning the class places the pieces outdoors where they will get sun for more than a hour. Students write predictions. Will they feel the same or different? Come back later and students can feel the difference by putting one hand on the black card and the other on the white.

Second version: Each group or pair has three cards, black, white and covered in aluminum foil. Leave these in the sun for a few hours and have students feel the difference. Will the aluminum be hotter or cooler than the paper cards?

Close:

Have students read their predictions and write short simple sentences about what happened. Help students include the words "absorb" and "reflect" . The white card feels cooler because it reflects the light.
