The Dinosaurs K-2 , Measuring dinosaurs.
Objectives :
Recognize the difference between the sprawling legs of a typical reptile and the upright legs of some dinosaurs. Recognize and describe the wide variety and immense size of these creatures. Students draw full scale outlines of dinosaurs with chalk. Students use comparative language to describe relative size. Other related objects in an integrated unit : Students gather data of interest from the dinosaur data files and the web pages at the bottom of this page under Dinolist'o'links! Compare the teeth of carnivores and herbivores. Tell how scientists use fossils to learn more about dinosaurs.
Materials:
Procedure:
Have students choose a dinosaur from the dinosaur data files. (Or have students collect data from books about name, length and height of specific dinosaurs.) Print the pages the students choose. During outdoor recess on a blacktop or concrete area the students can measure and draw the dinosaur to full scale from the measurements on the pages you printed. Measure height and length to show students the boundaries of their full scale outline drawing before they start using the chalk. When their drawing is complete have students stand at the head and others stand at the tail to view and compare the lengths of their bodies.
When you return inside ask the students to rank all the types of dinosaurs chosen in the class from the tallest to shortest, longest to shortest etc. Have the students write about the dinosaurs they drew outside using comparative language including taller than, longer than etc. Have the students draw the creatures and label the anatomy. The students can use and write about comparing the size of specific dinosaurs to people.
