The many ways to germinate seeds
See more info and details about
germination at Iowa State.
Most seeds of small plants will germinate
within two weeks if they stay continuously moist and they are
warm. Don't let them get dry after starting the process but don't
saturate them either. They can possibly rot before germinating.
- Wrap the seeds in tissue paper and keep
moist with a spray bottle in a petri dish.
- Plant a pack of seeds at different soil
depths for a success comparison.
- Plant seeds in cups and put half the cups
in a dark closet and the rest near the window.
- Keep a bed of cotton balls saturated. The
seeds will be soaking up water from the cotton.
- Build a box that shows the roots too!
- Have the students record each attempt in
their journals. After trying a few different methods,
students weigh the advantages and disadvantages in each.
After they sprout the children can carefully place them
in a cup of soil. Have the students relate the sequence
of events in germination.
