A classroom guide to pets and
insects.
WARNING!
You must always arrange for the students to wash their hands
after handling pets!
- PETS:
Keeping crickets, worms
and lizards in the classroom as pets. Classroom pet care with
details and good tips.
- Lesson Plans:
- Real live crickets in an outdoor
jumping contest!! Objectives: measurement with a
yardstick, observation skills, comparison and contrast.
Make a graph of the longest jumps. This includes a
reproducible data collection sheet.
- Pollination- bees, trees and the
work of our food. My class loved this lesson! Model for
the students how to collect pollen in the form of ground
colored chalk from a fruit tree blossom. They act ( and
play) out the process outside. Objectives: Comprehension
of the process and counting by tens. A great stimulator
for creative writing.
- Meal worm time trials! Some
of the most squeamish children will become the biggest
participants in your worm track meet. Students measure,
record, graph and write to summarize the data.
Measurement objectives include time and distance.
3. Insect lesson plan resources on the web and
in print:
Students learn many things from interaction
with living creatures. One is empathy. Other objectives include
skillful categorization, measurement, writing to record data and
life cycle processes among many others.
Almost any pet will need at least a half hour a
week of attention. Usually the bulk of that time is cleaning the
cage or home. Some duties can be performed by responsible
students and this saves time for the teacher but safety comes
first. For instance, virtually all pets can carry different
strains of bacteria. For younger students the involvement in
maintenance might be limited to highly supervised small groups.
