A magnet experiment

Objectives:

Counting, greater than, and comparison.

Prior Knowledge:

They should be able to orally count in a group to 100. This could be an introduction to numbers over 100 if your magnets are strong enough. Use smaller paper clips for higher numbers. Precede this with other lesson plans that define greater than and less than.

Materials:

Procedure:

Label the two magnets "A" and "Z". Count and write down the total number of paper clips that can be held by "A". Do the same for "Z". Which one is the stronger magnet? Students fill in the spaces on the worksheet with the numbers they counted on their attempt.

Close by asking the students to predict how many clips can be held by holding the two magnets together. The two magnets together will hold more than either one by itself. Preview or review other magnets lessons.

Centers:

Students can try to arrange the clips so that more can be held by the same magnet.
