The Power and Danger of Magnets
Objective:
Students comprehend that a magnetic field exists around magnets.
Materials:
Procedure:
Play a music cassette tape on a tape recorder for a few moments and have the students agree that the tape works. Then take the tape to a magnet and rub the magnet all over the tape housing for a minute or so. Put the tape back in the player and play it. It should be silent. The magnet will erase the music. This can also be shown with an expendable computer disc. Again, keep the magnets tied to a table away from the computer or any other magnetically stored data. See Fun with Filings.
