Floating Magnet

Objectives:

Demonstrate repelling magnets. Have students predict attraction.

Materials:

The floating magnet: Do your best to not let the students see the magnets attracting. That is what they are going to predict later. Simply stick a long pencil through the styrofoam to make a pole. Lay one magnet on the styrofoam around the pencil. The other magnet can be dropped and it will repel the lying magnet.

To conclude:

Ask the students to predict what will happen when the floating magnet is turned over and lowered onto the pencil? Review or preview other magnet lessons. Have students draw and write about what they saw and experienced. Groups can build "cages" with pencils and glue.
