The blouse of Santa Catarina. (click on the picture for a detail of the cloth)
I met these three sisters in Panajachel. They come each day on a short bus ride to sell handicrafts. The blouse is backstrap woven and contains horizontal rows of geometric patterns. In each row there is always a accent color that highlights a single stroke, no matter how small, in the pattern. In the family in this picture the stroke is in a bright red. The blues and purples of the foundation are the brightest in Guatemala.
Pana is often called Touristachel. It is truly beautiful there but the tourism is distracting. However it is necesary to at least pass through if you want to reach the towns on the other side of Lake Atitlán like Santiago Atitlán and San Juan de la Laguna.
