Using your senses to learn

Test of the sense of touch

Objectives:

Students use their sense of touch to distinguish characteristics in familiar objects. Students have an object of discussion that requires an answer.

Materials:

Procedure:

Place a single item in a paper bag for each group and students put their hands behind their back to feel the item without being able to see it. They simply guess or identify the item by how it feels.

With each item teach them how to use vocabulary like ,

smooth, rough

small, large

lined, bumpy, pointed or grooved

curved, straight, round or flat,

cylinder, cone, sphere, cube, disc, or as many others as you can recognize as appropriate depending on the examples at hand..

Have each group come to a final decision and then have the groups share answers. What characteristic of the item let you know what it was without seeing it? What descriptions fit the item the best? What characteristics did the groups name to defend their answers? How did you use your sense of touch to tell one item from the other?
