Tips for planting trees from containers or with bare roots:
Materials: ( at your favorite nursery, or you can get free trees by joining The National Arbor Day Foundation )
The basic tree planting rules:
Choose the area- The tree must receive full light at least eight hours each day. Plant at least eight feet away from sidewalks. Plant tall trees like pine or cottonwood at least twenty feet away from permanent structures, and plant at least thirty feet away with broad trees like oak and pecan. Dig and refill the hole- Give the roots lots of room in both the width and depth of the hole when you dig. Don't let the roots be all pushed together. Mix up the soil with a soil conditioner before you fill up the hole. Keep the area around the tree very well watered for at least one month. During the entire first year of establishment water generously every week or ten days. Be sure to maintain the moisture in dry weather especially when hot. Mark the tree clearly with a large stake to prevent being accidentally trampled or mowed.
Before Planting- a classroom marvel:
Many bare root saplings will survive for an extended time before being planted in the ground. This allows time for the students to see changes that occur. Keep the roots wrapped in newspaper in a bucket or plastic bags with an inch of water. They can also grow in soil in coffee cans if small drain holes are made. Keep a tray under them. Saplings in spring can bud and grow leaves in the classroom.
