Allan Park was due at Rockingham at 10:45. "We're always told to be there ten minutes early." Park was 20 minutes early, arriving at 10:25. He came up Rockingham going north, missed the house and turned right on Ashford, went half way down Ashford, made a U turn, came back and parked parallel to the Ashford Gate, across the street. He stepped out of the car, sat on the curb and smoked a cigarette for five minutes or so. He then got back into the car and waited five minutes or so.
At 10:40 Park drove around to the Rockingham gate. He parked parallel to that gate, on the opposite side of the street, looking at it on his left as he looked out the driver's window. He decided it did not look easy to get into. The gate entrance seemed too narrow. "The two walls were there and the way the driveway bent this way, it didn't look as easy as the other side...." At that time he did NOT notice a white Ford Bronco near the Rockingham gate. Nor did he see one inside the gate as far as he could see.
Park went back to the Ashford gate, still about 10:40 (he said it didn't take long to drive around and back). He pulled into the Ashford drive, right up to the gate and parked. He turned off the headlights, leaving the parking lights on. He got out of the car and rang the intercom; got no answer. He "buzzed" a few more times.
He could see the house, one light upstairs, none downstairs. There was a porch light at the front door which lit up an arc in front closest to the doorway, not very bright, a normal porch light. The house was dark downstairs. The driveway was dark from the corner of the garage back. There was a light very high up on the garage which "didn't offer that much light."
Park rang the bell off and on from 10:40 to 10:50, with no answer. He got back into the car and made a phone call paging his boss; the car door was open. He paged his boss first, then when he didn't return the call, Park called his mom and had her get a number for his boss's home. He called that number and got no answer. While he was waiting for his boss to call, he got out of the car and rang the intercom a couple more times. Then when his boss called back at 10:55, Park got back into the car.
Park told his boss he didn't think anybody was home. His boss told him "Mr. Simpson's always running late, so just make sure you hang out until about l 1:15 and if he's not there by then, just go ahead and come on home." His boss asked if there was a light on in the pantry behind the garage area, and Park said no.
While Park was on the phone call with his boss, a white male "come out from behind the house" toward the driveway (from the path on the Ashford side of the house). This was at about 10:56 to 10:57. This was a white male, 5' l1", 170 lbs, blond hair, medium length. He was holding a flashlight. The conversation with Park's boss lasted about two to three minutes.
Almost simultaneously with seeing the white male, Park saw "somebody cross the driveway and go into the house from this area." He couldn't tell whether the person was male or female, was 6', 200 lbs, and was a black person. The person was wearing dark clothes. Park couldn't tell if anything was in this person's hands. The person was walking "pretty fast" and went into the front door. Marcia Clark asked if Park could tell where "they" came from, whether from Rockingham or the garage area. Park said he couldn't tell what direction or where that person was coming from, he was walking toward the front door. Then a couple of lights came on, one in the entryway.
Park was waiting to see if the white male was going to open the gate. He didn't; "He was just standing there." "I kind of recognized him, he waved at me." So Park got out and buzzed the gate. Mr. Simpson answered the intercom. "...told me he overslept and just got out of the shower, and that he'd be down in a minute." (It was about 15 - 20 seconds from the time Park saw the person enter the house, lights went on, and Park buzzed the gate.) Park got back in the car and waited for the gate to open, which took the white male another 30 seconds or so.
Marcia Clark asked "Did you see where the white male was at that point?" Park said "He stood there pretty much the whole time." Marcia Clark: "Could you see whether he walked over to the garage area at some point while you were waiting for him to open the gate and talking to Mr. Simpson?" Park said "Not that I can recall, no." She asked if the white male and the black person were ever on the driveway at the same time, and Park said he didn't remember that.
Park then drove inside the gate, parked with the driver's window parallel to the front door. He "popped" the trunk and got out. There were a couple of black duffel bags on the ground. "There was another one laying back towards the garage area, towards the back of the two cars that were parked in there." It seemed to be a dark duffel bag. When Park and Simpson were toward the back of the car, the white male offered to go get the bag, and Simpson said "No, that's okay, let me get it." And he did. Park didn't put it in the limo, Simpson did, and Park didn't remember whether it went into the trunk or inside the car.
Marcia Clark asked "Were there cars parked in the driveway?" Park said "From what I remember, yes." Marcia Clark asked "Where were they?" Park said "There was two parked right here." One was a Rolls Royce and he couldn't tell the other. The bag was on the dirveway just to the rear of the car in back.
When Park got out of the car, the white male came up and asked how long he was ringing the bell. He said about 15 minutes. The white male told him about an earthquake and asked if he had felt one, and later on also asked for a flashlight. After talking to Park, the white male walked to the corner of the southernmost tip of the garage, calling the dog. Park was petting it and the dog didn't move. Park couldn't recall whether the white male went around to the area south of the garage, but when the dog didn't come, the white male came back.
Then Mr. Simpson came out, carrying a Gucci garment bag. He put it on the ground. Park put it in the trunk. Park picked up the duffel bags and asked where Mr. Simpson wanted them; he said inside the car. Park said it was five minutes at most between the time he first saw the black person go in the front door until Mr. Simpson came out of the house.
Mr. Simpson was wearing stonewashed jeans, white polo shirt, collared (golf shirt); Park didn't know about his shoes. Park didn't notice any "unusual" behavior, but said he had never met him before. Park didn't remember whether Simpson's hair was wet and he didn't notice any injuries to Simpson's hands.
When the white male came back over, "he helped him--at some point they got the golf bags out of one of the cars and brought that over to the car. I was sitting at the back of the trunk most of the time." Simpson heard them talking about the earthquake; "...as he was walking by getting his bags, he said, "Oh, we had a earthquake?"
After all the bags were in the trunk (a total of five bags were loaded into the car), the white male and Simpson walked into the entry of the house, in the front door area, to lock up the house or whatever; Park was standing by the back limo door ready to open it. They were in there not more than a minute. Park couldn't hear what they were talking about. He did hear Simpson say "You go around this way and I'll go around the other way." The white male then walked towards the garage. Park closed the trunk up and was going to go with them, but Simpson said "We gotta go." Park didn't see where the white male went. He and Simpson left at 11:10 or 11:15 from the Rockingham gate. He turned left, and didn't look to see if there were any cars parked on the right side of the gate--he wasn't looking for parked cars.
In the car, Simpson said two or three times that he was hot. He turned the air conditioner on and had his window down. He turned the interior lights off and on a couple of times. He had his bags on the floor, and was bending down. They arrived at the airport at 11:35.
At the airport, Park got out, popped the trunk, started to help get the bags. He grabbed the Gucci bag first; Simpson asked him to get a sky cap. He sat down the Gucci bag and sent for the sky cap but they were busy, so he got a luggage cart. He came back and Simpson put the golf bag on the cart and the Gucci bag. Marcia Clark asked "What about the two duffel bags and the other bag?" Park said "He carried them."
On cross-examination, Mr. Shapiro pointed out that at the grand jury Park said he saw a black male, and now was saying he couldn't tell whether the person was a male or female. Shapiro pointed out that in a telephone conversation with Mr. Shapiro, before he had talked to the police on the 15th of June, Park had described the black person's weight as180 lbs, and Park had also said when Simpson came out of the house he was wearing a thin black overcoat. Park had also told Shapiro in that conversation that he couldn't tell whether it was Simpson walking into the house. Park also saw Simpson walk in and out of the house two or three times during the time they were loading the bags. Simpson only carried out luggage. Park said he remembered putting three bags in the trunk, and the white male put the golf bag in the trunk.
Park agreed the DA had played that tape for him (he had not known that conversation was taped), and that his testimony was slightly different. Park was interviewed by Officers Paul Tippin and Brian Case, there was no tape and no written statement.
