Rounded "Straight 8" Loudspeakers
![]()
This site is dedicated to my project of building a set of loudspeakers, that I purchased from "Electronic Tonalities" or better known as Bottlehead.com.
Bottlehead.com is dedicated to Do-It-Yourself Audio and sells Tube Amplifier kits, a Tube Pre-Amplifier kit and a Loudspeaker Kit. I think they are one of the best companies on the web to purchase DIY Audio equipment. You will get the best equipment for the price with Bottlehead. It's nice to see a company with such great products not out price themselves. I believe they understand that not everyone that enjoys Audio was born with a silver spoon in their mouth. For example; I purchased the "Straight 8" set of loudspeakers for $599.00. This kit included all of the speakers, crossovers, insulation, wiring and great instructions. All I had to do was build the cabinets. If you don't want to build your own cabinets, you can purchase those, too. It will be pretty tough to find a better sounding set of speakers that are as efficient as the Straight 8's, at a lower price. These speakers are so efficient they can be used with Single ended tube amplifiers. Click Here to go directly to the Straight 8 web site.
The instructions that came with the kit, told me to build a rectangular box.
The directions were excellent to work from. They were very clear
about everything in the building process, there was no guessing about what to do
next. I built this box, but added the rounded tops on them for something a little
different. I don't know why, but all of the sudden, I'm tried of boxy looking
speakers. So, I just tried something that I never have done before. I'm not a very
experienced wood worker, but I think they turned out OK. This was the first time
I have ever worked with real wood veneer. It really was not very hard at
all. If you have ever glued down a piece of Formica and trimmed it off
with a router, it's as easy as that. I purchased my wood veneer at http://www.tapeease.com
, Dave was a super nice guy at Tape Ease. He helped me pick out two pieces of
Mahogany wood veneer over the phone. I highly recommend purchasing your wood veneer at Tape
Ease. My veneer arrived at my house on time and was packaged great.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me.
Below, I have the pictures of the process of building my Rounded Straight 8's. This is the first time I have created a web page, so it's pretty straight forward looking.
I have divided the building process up into 4 sections, the Cutout and Assembly Stage, Covering Stage, Finishing Stage, and Final Conclusions Page.
Hope you enjoy!
