SSMN SYMBOL

"The symbol we chose is a cross.

Not too big.
We can wear it in a secularized
multi-racial world.
Not triumphalist
the upper vertical is longer:
'I have offered all to God.'

"The body in an attitude of gift
can recall our motto.
At the same time dead and risen
emphasizes a sign of hope.
It could be from any race
in our world
hollowed into a cross.
It can signify
kenosis
selflessness
an aspect of mystery
in which our identity is rooted."
(General Chapter, 1995)

It was a unique moment when, at our Chapter meeting of 1995, in a stirring celebration, we received the cross pictured here, which from now on is the cross worn by the Sisters of St. Mary - the cross where the body of Jesus is engraved in the mystery of his death and resurrection.
