2002-2003 Alvin & Elsie East Scholarship Recipients

In 1970 Alvin & Elsie East, who were long-time members of Hyde Park Christian Church, expressed a desire to help pay the expenses for college students who were also members of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the immediate Austin area. The Hyde Park Christian Church Educational Fund was established with a gift of $10,000 from the Easts. In 1971 the first scholarships were awarded to two students. The fund would eventually be renamed to honor the memory of the Easts and their generosity.

Over the years the fund has grown through investments and additional gifts from the Easts, their estates and other donors until today it stands at nearly 1.4 million dollars. The amount available for providing scholarships varies from year-to-year. That amount is based on a formula that is applied by the Department of Higher Education in St. Louis, Missouri, which manages and administers the fund.

This year (2002) is the 31st  anniversary of those first two scholarships. On August 4th, we awarded scholarships to 28 student from seven Austin area Disciples churches. These 28 students represent 14 different institutions of higher learning.
