DeForest Kelly
1920-1999

When we first came across this shot of DeForest Kelly, we sort of hoped it was from a long-forgotten Star Trek prequel, maybe even a flashback scene of Mr. Leonard McCoy several years before he became Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, chief surgeon and diagnostician of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Well, at least the actor really is DeForest Kelley, albeit a somewhat prehistoric incarnation of this fine actor who appeared in movies and television for close to 20 years before becoming one of the most recognizable doctors in the known (and unknown) universe. We almost didn't recognize him in this still from 1947's Fear in the Night, a suspense thriller about a guy whose really bad dream may or may not be true. Incidentally, the story was remade in 1956 under the title Nightmare, with Kevin McCarthy inheriting the role, and both versions were directed by Maxwell Shane.
