The 1997 graduates of St Joseph's Convent St George's have been
urged to enter the world with caution and to embark on their journey with a
sense of purpose. The advice came from a former student of the school and now
Grentel's personnel manager Mrs Hazel Bierzynski when she delivered the feature
address at the school's graduation ceremony last week Friday.
"The foundation of life is laid in our early years. Everything
you have been taught, all your experience and the people who have positively
influenced you, have served as the building blocks of this foundation, to
prepare you to embark as an adult on the journey through life. The direction
you choose to take is now up to you and you alone," she told the 104
Mrs Bierzynski said "Your choices will not always be simple and
you may be required to draw on all the virtues and values instilled in you
throughout the years. It may not always be easy to do what is right or good for
you. You will make mistakes. What is important though, is that you learn from
those mistakes. "Your outward appearance or the money you have or are able to
make," she said "have little to do with how successful you are in life. On your
journey, never lose sight of your true sense of values - your dignity and your
integrity . Do not allow yourselves to become obsessed with seeking material
wealth, and abandoning those values."
Mrs Bierzynski reminded the students that they are important to
the development of the country and are therefore never too young too
insignificant or too unimportant to make a contribution. "You face a
challenging future in terms of employment opportunities. However, are you going
to allow yourself to become a victim of self-pity and wait for people to make
things happen for you? Will you go through life thinking that the world owes
you a living? If that is the case, you will never move beyond where you are,"
"Life does not owe you anything! Life is not unfair! It is up to
you to stand up to your challenges! Be clear about your purpose in life, and
find a way around the obstacles that present themselves. You have the ability
to do so deep within yourself - Find it! for most the important ingredient of
success - is belief in yourself," Mrs Bierzynski added.
The ceremony's valedictorian was Ms Tonya Wells.
