Money will be used to purchase gifts for elementary school students

The Staff Advisory Council will get its fund raising for its Holiday Outreach Project in full swing, said Catherine Mantegani at the council meeting on Tuesday.
She serves on the Communications Special Project Committee which plans the annual event.
She said every year, council members dress up as Santa Claus and go out to Webb Elementary School to give presents to all 1,100 students.
Webb Elementary School has the highest percentage of underprivileged children in Arlington, Mantegani said.
"It's fantastic," she said. "I got to be a part of it last year, and the kids were so appreciative and had such a good time."
The project committee will place donation jars for the event in most academic departments on campus later this month.
Vice Chair Valerie Goodwin said she has been working on new ways to raise funds for the project.
"I have been trying to get the Texas Rangers to donate an autographed jersey or a baseball," she said.
She said the council could sell raffle tickets for a chance to win the memorabilia.
Mantegani said her committee already has $3,700 for the project, but its goal is $5,500.
"For a lot of the kids, this may be the only Christmas present they get," she said.
In other business, Public Affairs Director Donna Darovich talked to the council about Proposition 17, a proposed constitutional amendment that will affect the way the Permanent University Fund is invested.
She explained that, although she cannot lobby for the proposition on company time, she could pass out non-biased information about it.
"It (Proposition 17) will make the way those funds are invested and used a lot better," she said.
She said that the proposition would not result in a tax increase, but would make the way the money is invested more modern and more efficient.
She encouraged the council members to look over the proposition information and make an informed decision when they vote on Nov. 2.
