THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

The Fifth Day of October

  1. At Messina in Sicily, the birthday of the holy martyrs Placid, a monk, a disciple of blessed Abbot Benedict, and his brothers Eutychius and Victorinus, and Flavia, a Virgin, his sister; also Donatus, Firmatus (a Deacon), Faustus and thirty other monks, who were slain by the pirate Manucha for the faith of Christ.
  2. At Smyrna, the birthday of blessed Thraseas, Bishop of Eumenia, who suffered martyrdom.
  3. At Auxerre, the death of St. Firmatus, a Deacon, and his sister Flaviana, a Virgin.
  4. At Trier, the holy martyrs Palmatius and his companions, who underwent martyrdom under the governor Rictiovarus in the per-secution of Diocletian.
  5. On the same day, the passion of St. Charitina, Virgin, who, under the Emperor Diocletian and the proconsul Domitius, was tortured by fire and cast into the sea. When she had escaped from there unhurt, her hands and feet were cut off and her teeth torn out, and she gave up the ghost in prayer.
  6. At Ravenna, St. Marcellinus, Bishop and Confessor.
  7. At Valence in France, St. Apollinaris, Bishop, whose life was illustrious for virtues, and his death adorned with signs and wonders.
  8. On the same day, St. Attilan, Bishop of Zamora, whom blessed Pope Urban II numbered among the saints.
  9. At Rome, St. Galla, widow, the daughter of the consul Symmachus, who after the death of her husband remained many years at the church of blessed Peter, intent on prayer, alms, fasting and other holy works. Her most happy passing is described by Pope St. Gregory.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
