THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY
The Seventeenth Day of October
- At Paray-le-Monial, in the diocese of Autun, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a professed nun in
the Order of the Visitation of Blessed Mary the Virgin. She won renown for her great merits in
spreading devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and in furthering its public veneration.
She was by Pope Benedict XV added to the list of holy virgins.
- At Antioch, the birthday of St. Heron, a disciple of blessed Ignatius, who was made bishop
after the latter, and following with pious imitation the way of his master, fell, a lover of Christ,
on behalf of the flock committed to him.
- On the same day, the passion of SS. Victor, Alexander and Marian.
- In Persia, St. Mameltas, Martyr, who by the warning of an angel as converted from the
worship of idols to the faith, and then stoned by the heathen and drowned in a deep lake.
- At Orange in France, St. Florentius, Bishop, who rested in peace, adorned with many virtues.
And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
