THE ROMAN MARTYROLOGY

The Eleventh Day of September

  1. At Rome, on the old Via Salaria, in the cemetery of BasilIa, the birthday of the holy martyrs Protus and Hyacinth, brothers, eunuchs of blessed Eugenia. They were arrested for being Christians, under the Emperor Gallienus, and ordered to sacrifice; but they did not consent and were first beaten with scourges for a long time and at length beheaded together.
  2. At Leon in Spain, St. Vincent, Abbot and Martyr.
  3. At Laodicea in Syria, the passion of SS. Diodorus, Diomede and Didymus.
  4. In Egypt, St. Paphnutius, Bishop, who was one of those Confessors who, under the Emperor Galerius Maximian, were condemned to the mines, after their right eyes had been torn out and the sinews of their left knees cut. Afterwards, under Constantine the Great, he fought zealously against the Arians on behalf of the Catholic faith, and at length, after gaining many crowns, rested in peace.
  5. At Lyons in France, the death of St. Patiens, Bishop.
  6. At Vercelli, St. Emilian, Bishop.
  7. At Alexandria, St. Theodora, who through want of caution fell into sin but, repenting of her deed, persevered in the religious habit, unknown, practicing wondrous abstinence and patience, until her death.

And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins. Thanks be to God.
