Mass of the Faithful

(Continued)

The Canon KNEEL

The Canon is the order of prayers designated by Holy Mother Church to be followed for the central part of the Mass: the Consecration. All servers should prepare for the Consecration by conducting themselves with utmost reverence.

Since incense is used during the Consecration, the Second Thurifer should check the thurible at this time and add a spoonfull of incense if needed.

The Canon begins with three prayers, Prayers for the Church, Prayers for the Living, Invocation of the Saints. The priest then begins the next prayer, Oblation of the Victim, by spreading his hands over the chalice and host. As he does this, the First Acolyte rings the bell once, and the MC descends to the foot of the altar and kneels on the step in the position shown in Figure XXI.

Consecration of the Host and Wine
After blessing the offerings once more, the priest takes the host in his hands and speaks the words from scripture describing the actions of Christ with the bread at the Last Supper. The priest then reverently bows lows over the gifts and speaks the words spoken by Christ himself as He changed bread into His Body:

Hoc est enim Corpus meum.

As the priest then genulfects, the MC holds up his chasuble and the First Acolyte rings the bell once.

The priest elevates the host, the First Acolyte rings the bell 3 times, and the First Thurifer incences the host three times.

Hic est enim calix sanguinis mei, novi et aeterni testamenti: mysterium fidei: qui pro vobis et promultis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.

As the priest then genulfects, the MC holds up his chasuble and the First Acolyte rings the bell once.

After the Consecration, the choir chants the second part of the Sanctus. The MC stands, genuflects, and returns to assist the priest at his left side. The thurifers stand, genuflect, and carry the thurible and incense into the sacristy. They return immediately to their standard positions, as shown in Figure XXII, and kneel.

Figure XXII

The priest recites several prayers silently, including a petition to God for his blessings, a prayer for the dead, and a prayer for happiness in communion with the saints in heaven. After these prayers, the priest uncovers the chalice, genuflects, takes the host in his right hand and makes the Sign of the Cross over the chalice 5 times saying the words of the Doxology, a prayer honoring the Holy Trinity. When the priest elevates the host over the chalice, the first acolyte rings the bells once.

Pater Noster STAND
At the end of the Doxology, the priest genuflects again and leads the Our Father and other prayers aloud in the dialogue printed below. All servers stand except for the torch bearers.

P) Per omnia saecula saeculorum.
S) Amen.
P) Oremus. Praeceptis salutarbus moniti, et divina institutione formati, audemus dicere:Pater Noster...
S) Sed libera nos a malo.
P) Amen.

The priest continues with other prayers in a low voice. He then uncovers the chalice, takes up the host, and breaks it. He also breaks off a particle from the divided host. He makes the Sign of the Cross with the particle over the chalice as he leads the following dialogue aloud:

P) Per omnia saecula saeculorum.
S) Amen.
P) Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.
S) Et cum spiritu tuo.

Agnus Dei KNEEL
All servers except the M.C. kneel for the Angus Dei, spoken by the priest aloud:

P) Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem.

The priest and the M.C now genulfect together, and the MC descends to the Gospel side of the altar and kneels.

The priest says prayers for peace, holiness and grace silently. He then genuflects and speaks the following words aloud three times, while the First Acolyte rings the bell once each time:

(1 Bell) P) Domine, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea.

(1 Bell) P) Domine, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea.

(1 Bell) P) Domine, non sum dignus, ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea.

The priest then receives the Sacred Body and Precious Blood. After the priest drinks the Precious Blood, the MC begins reciting the Confiteor, and all servers join the recitation in unison:

S) Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Joanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et tibi, Pater: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo et opere: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, Beatum Michaelem Archangelum, beatum Joannem Baptistam, sanctos Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes sanctos, et te, Pater, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

All servers now rise with the MC and position themselves on the step in the positions shown in Figure XXIII for communion. On his way to the kneeling position, the Second Thurifer retrieves the paten from the credence table.

The priest takes a host from the ciborium and elevates it slightly while turning to face the people. He speaks the following words aloud three times, while the First Acolyte rings the bell once each time as noted:
